Considerable increase in cargo handling in Szczecin and Swinoujscie Seaports

Seaports of Szczecin and Swinoujscie enjoy an increase in cargo handling. According to preliminary estimates in April this year, both ports handled 1,520.9 thousand tonnes of cargo, which translates to 79.6% increase in relation to the corresponding period of last year when cargo handling reached 847 thousand tonnes.

In the first four months of 2010, the ports handled 5,060.1 thousand tonnes of goods, which is 49.4% more than in the same period of last year.


The largest increase applies to coal handling. In the four months of this year, cargo handling was 2,444.1 thousand tonnes, whereas in the same period of last year 929.5 thousand tonnes. The increase reached 162.9%.
The increase in coal handling is yet more visible month-to-month. In April 2009 the ports handled 226.2 thousand tonnes of coal, whereas in April this year 802.1 thousand tonnes – an increase of 254.6%!
Increase has also been recorded month-to-month as regards general cargo: April 2009 to April 2010 by 33.2 %. In the four months of this year, the increase was 22.1% if compared with the same period of last year.
In comparison with the first four months of last year, in 2010, grain handling dropped by 39.2 %. This commodity is sensitive to market fluctuations and several other factors influence grain handling, including yield in a given year, stocks, and exchange rates.
