Improved figures for cargo handling

A detailed analysis of figures has confirmed preliminary findings regarding good results in cargo handling in the Szczecin-Świnoujście seaports. In June only, cargo handling increased by 15.8 %, whereas in the first half of the year by 2.1 %.

In June this year, ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście handled more cargo than in the same period of last year by over 286 thousand tons, which translates into an increase of 15.8 %. The good result was recorded in such cargo groups as coal (23.9 %), grain (23.7 %), break bulk (17.4 %), oil and products and gas (94.2 %). The latter was due to the handling of two gas carriers at the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście. Unfortunately, decrease has also been encountered in certain cargo groups, e.g. ore (-14.7 %), other bulk (-18.4 %), and timber (-96.6 %). In June this year, the ports handled more containers by 18.5 % than in the corresponding period of last year.
In general, the first six months bode well for the rest of 2016. After the first 6 months of 2016 cargo handling increased by 2.1 % comparing to the same period last year. Break bulk handling increased by 12.8 % and oil by 4.7 %. Unfortunately, in that period, negative cargo handling figures remain in such cargo groups as coal (-8.9 %), ore (-11.4 %), other bulk (-13.9 %), grain (-2.2 %) and timber (-30.7 %).

In the first 6 months of the year, handling of containers exceeded 40 thousand TEU, which accounts for nearly 3 percent increase comparing to 2015.

The forecast for cargo handling in the second half of the year is moderately optimistic, since the market is quite volatile. Nevertheless, statistics should improve due to LNG handling in Świnoujście and the establishing of the Szczecin Bulk Terminal.
