Positive balance of Q1 2019 cargo handling

Q1 2019 cargo handling in the Szczecin and Świnoujście seaports was 8% higher than in the corresponding period of last year. so far, both ports have handled 7,328.4 thou. tons, which is 520.6 thou. tons more than in the same period last year.

The growth was generated chiefly by coal, fuels and other bulk, with better than 2018 levels by 25.2, 27.1 and 17.6% respectively. The two ports recorded higher import and export of coal and coke. As regards fuels, apart from gas carriers, the ports handled more ships with fuel and heavy oil in import and export. There were more ships with fertilizers, phosphate rock, crude iron and aggregate, which actually contributed to improved results for other bulk.

In this first quarter, the ports handled less ore by 8.3 percent, grain by 5.8 percent, general cargo by 1.6 percent and containers by 29.8 percent.

Month to month comparison shows that March 2019 was nearly 30 percent better than March last year. Apart from grain and containers, handling in all other cargo groups has increased, i.e. general cargo by 1.1 percent, oil and oil products by 3.9 percent, coal by 36.2 percent, other bulk by 42.1 percent and ore by 51.3 percent.
According to the Ports Authority forecast, this year’s cargo handling should be around 30 m tons in Szczecin and Świnoujście combined. 2018 was very good for both ports which handled 12.5 percent more cargo than in 2017, which accounts for nearly 29 m tons. (Monika Woźniak-Lewandowska)
